The Heart Gallery of Iowa

The Heart Gallery of Iowa is a traveling photography exhibit of Iowa children who are waiting to be adopted from foster care. Volunteer photographers donate their time to create portraits that bring out the personalities of these children. This helps significantly increase the chances of children finding an adoptive home!

Background and purpose

The New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) brought the first Heart Gallery opening to a crowd of over a thousand people at the prestigious Gerald Peters Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 2001. Today many states use the Heart Gallery concept to raise awareness and educate communities about the urgent need for foster and adoptive parents - especially for hard-to-place children such as teens and sibling groups.

The Heart Gallery of Iowa travels around the state and is booked for exhibit in as many places as possible. Venues vary from art galleries to shopping centers to churches. The exhibit can include ten portraits or thirty portraits - whichever fits the space and the current needs of Iowa’s children. The Heart Gallery helps increase awareness of children who need stable, permanent and loving homes!

Our Heart Gallery features 16” x 20” portraits on easel stands.
